2019 Mazda MX-5 Miata
It can be hard to know if you have a brake light out on your vehicle, but driving without your lights on can be dangerous that they could lead to a potential accident on the Plymouth roads. Then, rely on our expertise for all of your service questions and concerns.

How to Change a Brake Light Step by Step

Whether it’s a burnt or broken bulb that needs to be replaced, replacing a brake light on a vehicle is a simple process that any Maple Grove driver of any level of experience can do. If you’re unsure of how to replace a brake light on your vehicle, then follow these easy steps:

  1. Choose the Right Bulbs: You’ll need to figure out what size of bulbs your vehicle needs. You can usually find this number in your owner’s manual, but our parts center can also help you find the part or parts you need.
  2. Remove the Tail Light Housing: After you’ve found the right bulb for your vehicle, take off the colored lens in front of the current bulbs on your vehicle. You can do this with a Phillips-head screwdriver. Once you have the cover off, take out the bad light bulb.
  3. Replace the Brake-Light Bulb: Put a little bit of dielectric grease on the end of the new light bulb before putting into your vehicle. This helps prevent corrosion and rust, which will help your light last longer, and it makes the light bulb easier to remove when it’s time to replace the bulb. Insert the new bulb, reattach the tail light housing, and you’re all set.

If you’d rather leave the installment of your new light bulb to the pros, then schedule service with our team at Morrie's Minnetonka Mazda.

Why Check Your Tail Lights?

Your tail lights allow you to signal to other drivers when you’re turning or changing lanes on the Eden Prairie roads. When your tail lights are out, you won’t be able to do this, and this can lead to minor or major accidents while driving. That’s why it’s important to check your tail lights every time you start up your vehicle. Since you can’t always see if your tail lights are out on the road, you’ll want to make sure that your lights are working when you lock your vehicle, or just take a glance at your tail lights whenever you exit your vehicle before shutting off your engine.
