One of the most common service complaints we get from drivers is hearing noises from their car when they make turns. There are a lot of causes to common car noises, and some of them are no cause for concern. However, other noises could indicate a mechanical issue that you’ll want to get taken care of as soon as possible. The team at Morrie's Minnetonka Mazda has put together a guide outlining the most common car noises and their causes below, so check it out!

The Most Common Car Noises

The two most common noises that you might hear when you make a turn are knocking or popping noises. You might also hear creaking, squealing, groaning, or whining when you turn the wheel. These noises aren’t necessarily caused by something serious, but they can grow into a more significant problem if you don’t bring your car in to see a service technician. Here’s what causes the most common car noises:

Causes of Common Car Noises

  • Creaking, clunking, or popping at low speed: worn-out or broken suspension joints
  • Whining at low speed from the engine: power steering pump
  • Crunching noise at high speed: CV joints
  • Screeching or whining at normal speed: power steering system
    • If there’s a problem with the power steering system, it could be easily solved by topping off the power steering fluid, or it could need more complex work with the hoses or belts.
  • Clunking noise: loose or broken tie rod
  • Knocking noise paired with poor handling on the Maple Grove roads: failing sway bar link
  • Creaking sound that gets louder over time: ball joint problem or bushing joint in the suspension system
  • Odd noises paired with a bouncy, loos feel driving over bumps: an issue with struts or shocks
