Why Does My Car Hesitate When I Accelerate?

2022 Mazda CX-30 with Driver in Front Seat

If you’ve found that your car hesitates when accelerating while on the Plymouth roads, then you may be wondering if there are any major underlying issues. This hesitation while accelerating can be the result of a number of issues, including something like a clogged fuel filter or even a broken fuel pump. Sometimes, something could also be wrong with the transmission. To find out what the best possible cause of your vehicle’s hesitation while accelerating may be, take a look at our guide from the service center at Morrie's Minnetonka Mazda. Common Reasons for Hesitation While Accelerating

Why does your car hesitate when you accelerate? As mentioned earlier, this could be due to a number of different underlying issues. If your car hesitates when accelerating on the Maple Grove roads, here are some possible reasons as to why:

  • Fuel Injectors: When the fuel injectors become worn out or dirty over time, this can prevent them from spraying fuel into the internal combustion chamber. When this doesn’t happen, engine hesitation will develop more and more over time.
  • Throttle Position Sensor: This system shows the main computer in your vehicle how much pressure to put on the accelerator and how much pressure is being put on the position of the throttle. The system uses that information to adjust the fuel and air mixture before actually entering the engine. So, when the sensor is broken, it won’t send the correct information, which could lead to lower engine performance.
  • Fuel Filter: The fuel filter is responsible for collecting dust, dirt, and other debris from getting mixed in with the fuel. If the fuel filter becomes clogged, then this could lead to your car hesitating while accelerating.
  • Fuel Pump: Your vehicle’s fuel pump is responsible for delivering a certain amount of fuel to the engine in order to cause combustion. If the fuel pump isn’t functioning properly, then the right amount of fuel won’t get delivered to the engine, and this can cause your engine to hesitate while accelerating.
  • Mass Airflow Sensor (MAF): Your mass flow airflow sensor detects the amount of air that is flowing into the engine and then transfers that information to the main computer in your vehicle. Using this information, the computer in your vehicle commands the fuel injectors to send certain amounts of fuel to the engine. A worn-out mass airflow sensor can cause engine problems and ultimately engine hesitation.
  • Transmission: If your car hesitates when accelerating, then this could be due to a transmission clutch slippage, which is usually caused by low or old transmission fluid. Other causes with your transmission could be an old transmission oil pump, damaged clutches, or a clutch solenoid failure.
